Day 4 – Thursday, March 19
For many of us, this is the first time they’re working from home for an extended period of time. For others, they’ve got the system down and have been able to set up their office/workstation/not their bed for a more productive working environment.
Some days can be very tempting to stay in bed, roll over and grab your laptop and start working but if you’re trying to avoid that mid-morning nap and get work done efficiently, it’s best to have a good setup to increase productivity and get to that Netflix show you were binge watching the night before.
Here are some ideas to consider when setting up your new home office:
Standing Desk
Sitting at a desk for too long contributes to leading a sedentary lifestyle which is a negative impact on our health. Adding a standing desk or stand to your regular desk helps decrease back, neck and shoulder pain and even helps correct posture. Studies show that standing while working burns 170+ more calories instead of sitting for the same amount of time.
Ergonomic Office Chair
While you are sitting, find a chair that is comfortable and provides the proper back and arm support to fit your needs. Ergonomic office chairs offer the proper support when you’re sitting for long hours so that you can work comfortably for extended periods of time.
Proper Lighting
Studies show that high lighting levels and daylight simulating fixtures can improve productivity. If you have options, choosing a location where you receive natural light is a great strategy to boost your productivity. The wrong lighting can cause eye fatigue and drowsiness which ruins productivity.
High-Speed Internet Access
With a majority of the workforce being home these days, your internet can slow down and be a cause of frustration. Internet bandwidth is being affected with the increase in video calls, streaming websites and increase in wifi devices. Take a look at your Internet provider options and see if there’s a better deal that fits your needs.
The Right Technology
Set yourself up with access to technology to help keep yourself plugged into what’s happening at the company and maintain communication with teammates. It’s important to keep remote employees engaged and active during these changing times.
Office Hours
Now this is a tough one especially for parents who now find their kids at home too. To limit interruptions, set office and working hours especially when you need to be heads down on a project or in a meeting.
Proper Office Equipment/Devices
Protect your home and its devices with power surge protectors. With an increase in connected devices being around the clock, brief spikes in voltage can end up harming your equipment. Equip yourself with the proper solutions to keep yourself organized whether it’s figuring out a filing system, purchasing office supplies or getting a storage cart – you need a system that works for you.
Personalize Your Space
Your working environment and space affects your mood and energy levels. Use this increase in indoor time to really personalize and create a space that is conducive for you and your productivity. Colors, personal trinkets and photos in our working environment affect our focus and energy levels but add fun and functionality to your home office. Use this time to really DIY and create a personal space.
